A touchscreen woven into a shirt sleeve
Researchers at NUS Singapore wove the world's first touchscreen out of thread. It shows video, takes touch input and survives 50 washes.
Researchers at the National University of Singapore have woven what they call the world's first touchscreen made from thread, published in Nature on 21 October 2026.
How it works
The screen is woven from 54 fibres. Each fibre is both a line of pixels and a touch sensor.
- 96×54 full-colour display at 30 fps
- Multi-touch input
- Demo apps: calculator, gallery, video, compass and voice commands
Built for real clothes
- After 50 machine washes, performance was almost unchanged
- The fabric is breathable, like cotton
Not in shops yet
This is a research prototype, and there's no product or launch date. But it's a big step towards clothes that are also screens.
