Google OKF: teaching AI agents about your company with markdown
Open Knowledge Format is Google Cloud's open spec for giving AI agents curated context: a folder of markdown files that links into a knowledge graph.
AI agents are only as good as the context they get. OKF (Open Knowledge Format) is an open specification from Google Cloud, introduced in June 2026, for packaging that context.
The format
- A folder of markdown files, one file per concept: a table, a metric, an API or a runbook
- YAML frontmatter at the top of each file; only the
typefield is required - Links between files form a knowledge graph that an AI can explore
Vendor-neutral
OKF isn't tied to Google. It's meant to work with any cloud, model or agent.
Tools to start with
Google released a BigQuery enrichment agent, an HTML graph visualizer and three sample bundles (GA4 e-commerce, Stack Overflow and Bitcoin data).
Early days
Version 0.1 is described as "a starting point, not a finished standard", so expect changes. Still, plain markdown is a very easy place to begin.
